According to rumors, Lisa Edelstein, who played Cuddy alongside Robert Sean Leonard and Omar Epps, two other original cast members, had contracts that expired after the seventh season. Because the show was only expected to go seven seasons, “House” had a limited budget for Season 8, and tried to negotiate lower rates for Lisa's and Omar’s return. Omar Epps took the deal, but Lisa had another offer to work on The Good Wife. It’s no surprise House and Cuddy’s on-screen chemistry led to a tumultuous romance that ended with little closure when Cuddy left the show one season early. Later life
Dr. Lisa Cuddy was a major character on House for the first seven seasons. House finds a woman named Hanna who is trapped under a mountain of rubble. The first responders and Cuddy both tell House that Hanna's leg needs to be amputated for a chance of survival. Cuddy claims that the reason why he is refusing is because he is bitter over her engagement and what he went through with his leg years ago. During their argument, Cuddy tells him that she doesn't love him and to move on. Afterwards she is sent to the hospital but on the way she dies due to a fat embolism, caused by the amputation. With the pain he is dealing with, Hanna's death, and what Cuddy said to him earlier, when House arrives home he rips the bathroom mirror off the wall to get his stash of Vicodin.
In addition to this professional tension, Cuddy is also seen as the object of House's sexual and romantic fantasies. A brief romantic past when she and House were students is alluded to, and House often makes lewd comments about her body and fashion choices. House implies that she often wears form-fitting, feminine clothing because she prioritizes her professional life and would otherwise be seen as a frigid, cold-hearted administrator. Cuddy found that it was difficult to become attached to Rachel and considered giving her up. However, during a phone call with Gregory House and Allison Cameron over doing a dangerous procedure on another patient and Rachel crying, Cuddy found herself feeling more attached to the baby's needs. Natalie Soellner hid the pregnancy from her family and friends and when she went into labor, she panicked and fled to an abandoned house where she believed she had given birth to a stillborn baby and abandoned it.
For the most part in the rest of the series, Cuddy's entire character seems to disappear unless she's directly dealing with House. In this episode, we get a full development of Cuddy's character - an administrator who is literally busy from dawn to dusk yet still finds time to deal with House's unreasonable demands on her time and attention. Many critics noted that if this episode had been shown earlier in the series, it would have established a better background for Cuddy to build sympathy and understanding from the audience. Most critics also preferred this episode to Wilson which similarly tried to develop James Wilson as a character, but was less effective in doing so. Part of the success of the episode was showing the full range of Cuddy's personality, something that required Edelstein's considerable acting skills.
She appears for a final time in Moving On, trying to convince Cuddy to date her banker Jerry Barrett. She is with Cuddy, Jerry and her husband when House crashes his Dynasty into Cuddy's house. She appears for the second time in Bombshells taking care of Lisa after her surgery. Her comment about sleeping pills leads Lisa to realize that House is back on Vicodin. Cuddy takes time for lunch in the cafeteria and runs into Wilson. She asks Wilson's advice on what to do with the insurance company, but he has no answers.
The recent events surrounding Eric Foreman's employment have given some insights into Cuddy's motivations. We can guess that although House has been fired several times, he may have, like Foreman, have been fired for saving the life of a patient at the expense of his job. We also know that Cuddy continued to defend House even though Foreman pointed out that if every doctor acted like House, the mortality rate among patients would skyrocket. Cuddy appears to have both the necessary tolerance for House's methods (which do, after all, save lives) and the willingness to stand up for House when everyone attacks him. We can surmise that Cuddy hired House in much the same circumstances that she re-hired Foreman, and perhaps for the same reason - to teach them both a little humility and get an excellent doctor in exchange. Reviewers were unanimous about how much they liked Lisa Edelstein's performance.
This is another situation where Cuddy could have used some help, particularly from one of her numerous oncologists. Oncologists have to deal with these issues all the time as many cancer patients seek "miracle cures" outside of medicine that often interfere with their medical treatment. Teaching hospitals often perform procedures for free as a way of training students, but this is widely seen as disregarding the patient's best interests, particularly their privacy interests. Having an operation under these terms was one of the reasons the father of Canadian single-payer insurance, Tommy Douglas, fought so hard for the end to a pay-for-play system. Among developed countries, the United States is perhaps unique in requiring physicians and patients to consider the cost of a medically necessary procedure. In most developed countries, sewing the thumb back on would be a medically necessary procedure covered under insurance.
Her father was Jewish from birth, but her mother was a Catholic who converted to Judaism when Arlene married Cuddy's father. She also comes from a long line of physicians - her great grandfather published a key medical text. We also know that she has also wanted to be a doctor ever since she was 12 years old. She often felt her mother treated her more harshly than her younger sister, but later came to believe that her mother only pushed her knowing that she was capable of great things. The only other salient fact about her early life is that she admitted to Wilson (who later told House) that she once slept with her father's best friend. It's mentioned in many parts of the show that she wants a child.
